Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a low impact system of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates. The system works your entire body, focussing on the less loved, but much needed smaller muscles, which can result in the appearance of a longer, leaner physique. Pilates utilises a range of apparatus, which when first exposed to can seem daunting, but when used in it’s proper form, will leave you feeling amazing and wanting more at the end of each session.

The other amazing benefit of Pilates, is that it will meet you wherever you are on that day. Some days you’ll feel stronger than others, and that’s totally normal, with Pilates every exercise can be modified from the original to work for your body in the way that is needed at that moment in time.

Will Pilates work for me?

The simple answer is Yes! Pilates will work for everyone, but just like with everything in life, you only get out what you put in. If you are looking for real results the more consistent you are with your practice, the sooner you will see the results you are after.

The instructors at Pilates Reformed are trained to work with you and help you achieve your goals.

What is the difference between Matwork, Reformer and Circuit Classes?

Matwork is the original work in the Pilates Method. Matwork utilises and progresses your own strength, relying on body weight as resistance. From time to time we incorporate small apparatus into the work to aid as a tool to extend exercises or to be used as a physical aid where needed.

Reformer is the most common of the Pilates equipment and what most group classes are based around. Reformers use springs and ropes as resistance, with each spring being a different tension to change the load on the muscles.

Circuit Classes incorporate the use of all Pilates equipment. Pilates Reformed hosts a Cadillac, Ladder Barrel, Wunda Chair and Spine Corrector as part of the full studio offering. All of these pieces of equipment challenge the body in different ways and many exercises can be adjusted as needed to help you gain strength and enable your body to move freely and how you desire.

What is Barre, (and how do I pronounce it)?

Barre is a modality that finds it origins in dance, and combines Pilates and Yoga principles into the dance world. The best thing is you do not need to have any dance experience to participate in a Barre class, you just need to come in and move to the music!

Utilising a Ballet Barre for standing and balance work, small weights, balls and bands you get a full body and mind workout, a little bit of a sweat and a whole lot of laughs.

Barre is pronounced BAR! But sometimes we like to say BAR-RE for fun!

How many classes a week should I do?

2-3 regular sessions per week will see you reach your goals, and progress with your practice and gain strength both mentally and physically. However, if you only have time for 1 class per week, you will still get all the same benefits, but physical results will take a little bit longer.

If you have specific goals in mind, or have been working with a Physiotherapist, Osteopath, Chiropractor or other Allied Health Professional who has suggested Pilates will be beneficial to your program talk to us about Private Classes, as these offer specific one on one work completely tailored to you and your goals.

Why do I have to wear grip socks in the studio?

Grip socks are essential when working out on any Pilates equipment. The specially designed grip pads on the base of the sock allow for grip on the equipment and also keep feet covered for hygiene purposes.

What else does Pilates Reformed offer?
